Along a stretch of Shakespeare Sarani, the footpaths are used for 2-wheeler parking and for small shops. This is common in a lot of places in Kolkata. At the same time, there is plenty of land that is unutilised, often very close to such encroachments. The city could easily plan the use of such plots better as vending zones, and free up the footpaths. The vendors as well as pedestrians will benefit.
